I went and finally bought myself a copy of The Killing Joke. You’d think after being a comic book fan all through high school I would have read it by now, but noooooo. The book is older than my brother so I went and purchased the 20th anniversary, deluxe edition.
I knew the plot, knew how it went, and even how it ended. But to be honest? That really didn’t ruin a single fucking thing. It’s really nothing more than a short story, but damn…. It’s 43 pages long, and I’ve read it about 5 times now. Certain parts I keep looking at over and over and over.
The drawings by Brian Bolland are amazing. I’ve known his work for a long time now but I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve seen in throughout an entire issue (the man works exclusively on covers now). And I have read things by Alan Moore before as well. But this one issue was clearly that thing that came along at just the right time. A comet must have been passing over at the time because it’s just so damn, fucking good.
I have read several different Batman comics and thought to myself “They really captured the essence of Batman in this issue.” Well this is without question the first time I have thought they that captured the essence of the Joker.
Even though Alan Moore left himself an out with the origin story he put it, I loved it. My favorite part being the single page showing the cowardly, awkward man who feel into the river, stumble out, sees his scarred appearance and begins laughing hysterically now as the Joker. It was the absolute epitome of the person who went in was not the person who came out.

Not even to mention the plot itself, the Joker’s plans, the fight at the end, and the actual killing joke. It was just amazing. I always thought there was too much hype about this issue, but fuck that, I was wroooooong.
So if anyone wants to borrow it, it takes all of 7 minutes to read and may even disturb you a little. I loved it for that part alone.
